Putting Down the Bumpers

Posted on

This is reblogged from my WordPress site at coming2him.wordpress.com

There you will find weekly posts, reflections of faith and God’s faithfulness.

I’m not a bowler, but I participate at the lanes once or twice a year as a family activity. The best scores I ever got were ones while bowling with our children when they were very young. I found that in the presence of the bumpers being up, my scores were exponentially higher. In doing this, however, the high scorer tends to walk away with a false sense of accomplishment and abilities.

I find my Christian walk can take on the same illusions. I think that I’m all good, scoring high in trust and faith only to find out the bumpers have been up. I usually awaken to this fact in the wee hours of the morning, as the family is sleeping and the housework hasn’t begun to call. In the quietness of those hours I enjoy some of my greatest time of prayer. They start off in intercession for others and often end in revelation. Recently as I was sharing with God, He began unpacking my feelings on a life change we are embarking on. Where I had thought I was walking fine, He showed me my apprehensions over success. In guarding myself to potential failure and hurt, I am being indifferent to blessing. I step confidently on the foundational stones of His adoption, salvation, inheritance, and provision; but in the next leap He is calling me to make, I find myself in the place of Zechariah. Like him, I say, “How can I be sure?”

How can I be sure people won’t hurt us again?

How can I be sure people won’t take everything from us again?

How can I be sure we won’t be falsely accused again?

How can I be sure we won’t be betrayed again?

It felt good to get those questions out in the open. I placed them at the feet of the Savior and moved on. Deciding to get some Bible Study in for a class I headed to Isaiah. I began reading what I thought was my assignment regarding the Trinity. The Holy Spirit had other plans, as this is what I read:

“Listen to Me, you who know right from wrong, you who cherish My law in your hearts. Do not be afraid of people’s scorn, nor fear their insults… I, yes, I AM the one who comforts you. So why are you afraid of mere humans, who wither like the grass and disappear? Yet you have forgotten the Lord, your Creator, the one who stretched out the sky like a canopy and laid the foundation of the earth. Will you remain in constant dread of human oppressors? Will you continue to fear the anger of your enemies?

My name is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. And I have put My words in your mouth and hidden you safely in My hand.”   (Isaiah 51:7, 12-13, 15a-16b NLT)

stepping stones

I realized that instead of taking that final leap, I had tread back over the stones that were comfortably safe. God was still calling me to take the next stone.

Always remind me, my God, who You are and where I am. You are the Creator of the universe, the Sovereign Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. I am hidden safely in Your hand. Raise my head, keep my eyes on You, let me cling to You and not to anything in this world. Teach me to enjoy Your blessings again and not fear loss. I will walk in this promise rejoicing in Your presence. Thank You for taking the bumpers down because when I throw a gutter ball, it is another opportunity to learn from You.

Taking a deep breath, eyes on Him, I leap.

Come to Me

Come to Me all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from Me for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” Mt 11:28-30

Meditate on these verses this week. See what the Holy Spirit speaks to you about them.
